the Centre for Civic Education in Pakistan (CCEP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) organized a dialogue with Pakistan’s mandate-bearing political parties on the Future of Federalism and Democratic Devolution in Pakistan. The aim of this exchange was to understand the perspectives of political parties on federalism and devolved governance following the passage of the 18th Constitutional Amendment, and the monumental shift in the federal architecture of Pakistan brought about by it.

A Mobile Court was launched today by Mr. Justice Dost Muhammad Khan, Honorable Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court and Marc-André Franche, Country Director UNDP in Pakistan. The Mobile Court bus will provide justice rapidly for litigants who cannot afford to travel to courts in the cities.

She has become a beacon of hope for underprivileged girls across the world. Malala Yousufzai, a young Pakistani girl, has become an advocate for educating all children and has defied the odds and death threats from the Taliban. Malala who now lives in the U.K., following attacks on her life in Pakistan, recently addressed the UN assembly. She urged world leaders to change their strategic policies in to address issues of peace and prosperity.

Marc-André Franche, Country Director, UNDP in Pakistan, visited Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to review the activities for the project Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand. This project is assisting in promoting the rule of law through provision of support to the justice and security sectors in Malakand division. The activities are currently in place in seven districts of Malakand including upper and lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner and Chitral.

Following the worst floods in Pakistan’s history in 2010, the complex needs of the affected population were addressed through various EU assistance measures.

Rising inequalities, across regions and gender, is one of the main development challenges not only for Sindh but for Pakistan and region. While poverty has reduced substantially across the globe – from 1.9 billion people living below the poverty line in 1990 to 1.3 billion people in 2008, income and wealth inequalities, access to productive assets, social outcomes and services remain widespread. Child death rates and stunting have been estimated 2 to 4 times higher for the lowest income quintiles when compared to the highest wealthiest quintiles.

The Government of Japan contributes USD 2 million for electoral assistance to the Election Commission of Pakistan
The Government of Japan and UNDP in Pakistan signed an agreement today to support the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in carrying out the upcoming elections. The Government of Japan’s assistance, totaling $2 million, will allow the ECP to train its polling staff, improve the elections results management system and extend its voter education outreach. Over 426,000 polling staff will be trained with UNDP support between March and May this year.

Saudi Fund for Development support community infrastructure rehabilitation in crisis affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has extended additional financial support to UNDP in Pakistan for US$ 1.3 million bringing its total contribution to US$ 6.7 million for community infrastructure restoration and rehabilitation in the crisis affected areas of district Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Secretary-General hails successful elections in Pakistan; first ever transfer of civilian Government
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has congratulated the Government and people of Pakistan on the successful conduct of national and provincial elections, hailing the polls, for which millions of voters turned out, as a major democratic step. “This is the first ever transition from one civilian Government to another and a significant step forward for democracy in the country,” the Secretary-General said of the 11 May elections, in a statement issued by his Spokesman.

Islamabad - The Higher Education Commission (HEC), Inter-University Consortium for Social Sciences and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Pakistan organized a dialogue on 18th Constitutional Amendment today at Higher Education Commission in Islamabad. The purpose of the dialogue was two-fold; Firstly, to design an international conference on democracy, federalism and decentralization to be hosted in August, 2013, and to establish a tri-partite interface between academia, government officials and donors to discuss challenges and opportunities presented by the 18th Amendment.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is preparing to train polling staff for the May 11 general elections with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). At the launch of its training program for master trainers, the ECP demonstrated the polling process which includes several new initiatives taken to increase transparency and public confidence in the elections.

For the first time in recent history, the South as a whole is driving global economic growth and social change. Around the world, the living conditions and prospects of hundreds of millions of people have been lifted by transformations in the South. By 2020, the combined economic output of three key emerging economies – China, India, and Brazil – will surpass those of the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Canada combined. Much of the dynamism of emerging economies is being driven by trade, foreign direct investment, and technology partnerships within the South itself.

The Tehsil Dar Office in Pabbi, district Nowshera was inaugurated today by His Excellency Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, Ambassador of the European Union. For recovery and restoration of communities in flood-affected districts across the country, UNDP and the Government of Pakistan launched a US$90 million Early Recovery Programme (ERP). The European Union contributed US$20 million to this programme. The programme worked in 4,000 villages across the country benefiting more than 5.5 million people in 29 most-affected districts, adopting an area-based development approach to early recovery with a special focus on women. This programme is among the largest early recovery and restoration programme carried out by UNDP.

UNDP in Pakistan handed over the first set of voter education materials to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today in preparation for the upcoming general elections. Voter education kits including stickers, posters, t-shirts, caps, pens and badges have been sent to the provincial, regional and district field offices of the ECP to support them in their significant work of reaching out to voters.

The UN firmly condemns the on-going violence in the country, particularly the recent tragic events in Quetta, Karachi and this past weekend in Lahore, targeting especially religious and ethnic minorities in Pakistan. The United Nations system in Pakistan joins the Secretary-General to convey heartfelt condolences to the families of all the victims and to the people of Pakistan.

The United Nations works to support a rule of law framework at the national level: a Constitution or its equivalent, as the highest law of the land; clear and consistent legal framework, and implementation thereof; strong institutions of justice, governance, security and human rights that are well structured, financed, trained and equipped; transitional justice processes and mechanisms; and a public and civil society that contributes to strengthening the rule of law and holding public officials and institutions accountable. These are the norms, policies, institutions and processes that form the core of a society in which individuals feel safe and secure, where disputes are settled peacefully and effective redress is available for harm suffered, and where all who violate the law, including the State itself, are held to account.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) launched its training programme for over 600,000 polling staff in Lahore today in preparation for the upcoming general elections. Over 360,000 polling staff will be trained in Punjab and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) supported by the UNDP. Training in the other provinces will be supported by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

The National Climate Change policy was launched today by the Government of Pakistan. The policy provides a framework to address the issues Pakistan faces vis-à-vis the phenomenon of climate change. It lays down policy measures for mitigation as well as adaptation for sectors including energy, transport, agriculture and livestock, industries, forestry, water resources, biodiversity, ecosystems with cross cutting themes of disaster risk reduction, human security and gender. It was developed by the Ministry of Climate Change with a wide range of stakeholders and the support of the One UN Joint Programme on Environment supported by UNDP.
