This is the first ever report prepared by a UN agency and tracks progress against various MDGs in the province.

    Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa commits funds for UNDP’s Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand project

    Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has granted approval for the allocation of resources to the Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand (SRLM) Project out of the Annual Development Programme to be commenced from July 2012 till June 2015. Under the cost sharing arrangement, the Government of KPK will allocate PKR 335 Million (25%) while UNDP will provide PKR 1004 Million (75%) for a duration of three years in both cases.

    UNISDR head calls for 'quantum leap' in approach to recurring floods in Pakistan

    The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Margareta Wahlström, arrived on a three-day visit to Pakistan today during which she will meet with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, the National Disaster Management Authority, Meteorological Department officials and aid donors, to discuss future risk reduction measures as the country tries to cope with floods which have displaced an estimated 5.4 million people.

    One year ago Pakistan was hit by unprecedented monsoon rains and floods. Across the country the scope and scale of the crisis was exceptional, affecting the lives of over 18 million people, washing away communities and livelihoods, and forcing millions to flee from their homes. The crisis took the lives of a confirmed 1,980 people and left an estimated 14 million in need of humanitarian assistance.

    UN agencies to partner on Early Recovery

    Three of the United Nations Agencies currently engaged in the rural aspects of the post-flood Early Recovery and manmade emergencies in Pakistan namely, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) envisaging joint implementation of projects valued at US$ 300 million in affected areas across the country. This is in the spirit of the OneUN agenda for Delivering as One. Pakistan is one of the original eight OneUN pilot countries. The agreement reconfirms the ideals that it is better to work together, sharing relative strengths. The agreement is expected to improve UN ability to support Government leadership in a more coordinated and effective manner.
