Govt to adopt UNDP poverty measure

ISLAMABAD: The government has shifted its definition of poverty from calorie intake to a multidimensional index to get a accurate estimate of poverty figures, Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal said in Islamabad on Thursday.

The decision was taken after difficulties were ascertained in measuring the exact number of people living below the poverty line.

Iqbal was speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the Pakistan government for initiating the development of the Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for the country.

“The traditional one-dimensional indices cannot reflect the true poverty levels in Pakistan,” Iqbal said.

“The MPI is more comprehensive, integrated and holistic as it covers education, health and living standards. This partnership between the Government, UNDP and University of Oxford will help us understand, and better address issues related to poverty in Pakistan.”
