In depth

Rule of Law

UNDP Pakistan supports the promotion of rule of law through the provision of support to justice and security sectors.  Support to rule of law aims at promoting an enabling environment, to secure peace and stabilization by enhancing confidence and trust of the local communities in the rule of law institutions and ensuring improved law enforcement, speedy justice, including that of informal justice systems.

Parliamentary Oversight

Strong, credible and effective governing institutions that have the confidence of the citizens and meet their needs and aspirations are the foundations of sound governance. UNDP is currently engaged in providing support to capacity development of parliamentarians, parliamentary officials and civil society partners to strengthen parliamentary oversight and policy guidance. Strengthening parliamentary oversight and women parliamentarians’ caucus on peace, security and stabilization are concurrent objectives.

Decentralization and Local Governance

UNDP Pakistan is working to strengthen participatory federalism and decentralization against the backdrop of 18th Constitutional Amendment.  Viewing the 18th amendment through a governance, development and public policy lens, we identify strategic areas of intervention for transition management at federal, provincial and local levels. UNDP is also working to develop policy support mechanisms and create institutional mechanisms to strengthen effective service delivery in a manner that is transparent and accountable to the people at the local level.

Electoral Processes

UNDP is assisting the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to strengthen its systems and conduct free, fair elections that are transparent, inclusive and credible. UNDP in Pakistan seeks to develop more inclusive, and accountable democratic institutions, systems and processes. On the supply side of governance, we aim to enhance the capacity of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Senate and Provincial Assemblies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. On the demand side, we are developing the capacity of civil society in advocacy and civic engagement while increasing the representation of women, youth, and minorities.

Effective Public Service

UNDP Pakistan is working together with the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability through institutional change and robust performance management. UNDP is undertaking various governance reforms and innovative measures for the performance of the federal government organizations.

Reforming FATA

UNDP is providing technical assistance to support the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to peacefully integrate the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas through the extension of civilian governance institutions and socio-economic development. UNDP is working to increase the capacity of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government to plan, communicate and implement fundamental governance and rule of law reforms as part of the integration process. The merger, one of the most significant political reforms in Pakistan’s history, is an unprecedented extension of constitutional rights and governance structures to five-million of the poorest people in Pakistan.
