Environment and Climate Change

UNDP supports the government, institutions and people of Pakistan to improve livelihoods by building capacities for climate change mitigation and adaptation, providing sustainable energy solutions and maintaining the integrity of ecosystems. Our hallmark approaches are policy reforms, institutional & human capacity building and innovative demonstrations in the field with a particular geographic focus on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Our Goals

Within the overall context of the recently approved National Climate Change Policy, our goal is to mainstream climate change as a priority in the government’s development agenda. We are working towards this goal through the development and implementation of various climate change adaptation and mitigation programmes related to sustainable energy, water management and conservation of ecosystems. more

Projects and Initiatives

  • This project mainstreams climate finance and strengthens the institutions involved in planning, budgeting and implementing climate change actions. It helps to integrate climate change into budgets and planning, and works with the Ministry of Finance to develop systems to track climate change expenditure.more 

  • The project aims to combat land degradation & desertification in Pakistan in order to protect and restore degraded ecosystems and essential ecosystem services that are key to reducing poverty. Phase-I has been designed to implement United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and for combating land degradation & desertification in Pakistan with the involvement of key stakeholders.more 

  • This project uses voluntary certification of non-timber forest products as a tool to promote biodiversity conservation and strengthen existing conservation efforts with innovative market-based mechanisms. The project develops community and institutional capacity for certified production of biodiversity-friendly non-timber forest products in Northern Pakistan and stimulates market demand for these products thereby creating new economic incentives for conservation.more 

  • This project aims to provide technical assistance to reduce the growth of energy consumption & related greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector in Pakistan, while simultaneously improving urban environmental conditions and trade competitiveness. It is helping in improving urban environmental conditions including air quality, urban mobility and city aesthetics as well as enhancing energy security.more
