Advocate Khunza Haji—the first woman from her village to go another city for higher education

February 4, 2021

Khunza is a remarkable young woman from Chitral who has accomplished her goals through her unwavering resolve. She hails from a village where girl’s education is not considered important. Despite her unsupportive environment, she dreamed of becoming a lawyer. She found encouragement and support from her brother who had wanted to become lawyer himself but could not pursue that dream because of his circumstances.

Not only is she the most highly educated woman of her village, she was also the first to go all the way to Peshawar for education. During her second year at Islamia Law College, she received a scholarship from UNDP which enabled her to finish her degree. She is currently practicing in Chitral and deals with civil and family cases.

Khunza feels very grateful for the ladies’ bar room constructed at Chitral district courts by the UNDP. There are not too many women practicing law in Chitral. Before this bar room, the few that did had no place to sit and do their work. Now, they have their own space where they can meet their clients and go about their professional activities in peace.
