Siksa is a remote village in Ghanche district, on the eastern most edge of Baltistan. The residents of this village have no fresh water supply close by and they had to travel a long distance to get water.
To help them deal with this situation, UNDP had a water supply line installed through their implementing partner MGPO. But the installation of this water supply was tied to one condition. The villagers had to plant 10,000 trees to qualify.
The incentive of fresh water at their doorsteps was enough to mobilize the whole community. They planted the required ten thousand trees. Not only those trees are half-grown now, but a second-generation plantation has also been started. Siksa is turning greener and the community is very happy with their accomplishment.
