How UNDP introduced a unique solution to improve lives of locals in Hunza

March 24, 2021

Sikandarabad in Hunza is one of those places where the water source was quite some distance away from the village. Due to this, the residents had to invest considerable time and effort just to get water for their everyday needs.

UNDP provided them with a unique solution in the form of a hydro-ram pump. This is a unique type of pump that requires no energy to operate. It is installed at a point lower than the source and the intended destination of the water. Water flows into the pump and compresses air into a pressure chamber. The air pressure thus generated pumps water back to a higher altitude, where it is required.

The lives of the people of Sikandarabad have improved, now that they are getting water at their doorstep.

With support from Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, 30 similar pumps have been installed under the Improvement of Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) project.
